Abstract

Placebo effect refers to beneficial changes to oneself induced by inert treatment. The present study revealed the altruistic side of placebo treatment. We provide evidence that placebo manipulation promotes costly prosocial behaviors by giving more money to others and alleviating other’s suffering at personal cost.
