Abstract
Studies show children’s performance on difficult tasks positively correlates with metacognitive private speech, and relatedly, mastery motivation. This study elicited on-task speech from preschoolers during a fishing task, which was linked to achievement-oriented parent language. Results suggest reciprocal socialization between parent achievement orientations and children’s metacognitive private speech.
