Abstract
Aggregating participant observations across stimuli is common practice in experimental psychology. Inferential analyses are carried out on these participant-level means, including effect sizes, which are used to as markers of meaningful group differences. The current study demonstrates biases in this approach that are eliminated with latent trait and item-level analyses.
