Abstract
People often avoid or downplay potentially useful health information. Individuals higher in spontaneous self-affirmation and optimism were less likely to avoid learning their disease risk and, among those who did not avoid, more likely to agree with their risk estimate. Engaging with health information is crucial for managing one’s health.
