Abstract
Attention control (AC) is a basic mechanism thought to underlie complex cognition. However, AC may itself be a complex construct. Here it was shown that AC consisted of alertness and goal maintenance factors. Furthermore, goal maintenance predicted higher cognition, but alertness did so only through its relation to goal maintenance.
