Abstract

Why do people gesture when they speak? On one proposal, gestures serve a speaker-internal cognitive function by facilitating spatial speech production. Do gestures also facilitate speech about abstract concepts that are metaphorically spatialized? Our large dataset shows no evidence that gestures facilitate speech production with spatial content, literal or metaphorical.
