The Dark Side of Curiosity: Desire to View Muted Instagram Content Is Associated with Psychopathology

We investigated Instagram users’ desire to uncover a negative image “muted” by a warning screen. Most participants (80%)— particularly those with elevated risk markers for psychopathology (e.g., higher perceived depression, low well-being)—said they would uncover the image. Our findings suggest these screens may not protect mental health and well-being.
