The Consequences of Social Norm Deviance in an Ultra-Settled Culture: A Field Experiment in the Hasidic Community

Abstract
This study of the consequences of norm violations in the Hasidic community suggests that publicly violating a strong norm in a “settled” culture makes the deviant become more critical of their community. Deviating also led individuals to depreciate their perception of the strength of norms and the costs breaking norms.
