Abstract

The achievement of online likes may temporarily increase self-esteem, but what happens when likes are gained via deceptive means? We demonstrate that deceptive like-seeking (e.g., buying followers) is most prevalent among low-self-esteem emerging adults with strong peer norms and deceptive like-seeking predicts decreases in feelings of peer belonging over time.
