Abstract

We examined ERPs to emoji embedded in text messages. In two experiments we found an enhanced P200 in response to face emoji, especially when they displayed an emotion inconsistent with the message, relative to object emoji. This suggests an early orientation to the emotion conveyed by face emoji.
