Abstract

A person with downturned head and gaze, narrowed chest, and slumped shoulders may be expressing shame, but alternatively may be experiencing fatigue or boredom. Female, but not male, participants perceived such a display as communicating negative self-conscious emotions if the person faced another individual, as opposed to being apparently alone.
