Centrality of Sexual Orientation Identity Is Association with Psychological Distress Among Lesbians, Gays, and Heterosexuals

Abstract
This study demonstrates that centrality of sexual orientation identity (SOIC) is important to the self-concept regardless of sexual orientation. Contrary to current thought, SOIC is associated with higher psychological distress levels among lesbian/gay individuals and lower distress levels among heterosexuals. We discuss our findings and their implications for resilience models.
