Abstract
A pre-registered randomized control trial finds that virtual reality promotes self-reported empathy towards child refugees, which persists over time, but does not yield increased real-world donations. The results also indicate that VR is more effective than traditional text-based interventions at increasing emotional empathy, but not cognitive empathy.
