Seeing What You Want: Prior Belief Biases Perception of Correlation in Scatterplots

Abstract
People could be biased by prior beliefs when interpreting data. We showed participants scatterplots and found that people see correlations that align with their belief as stronger with belief-triggering data (e.g., gun and crime rate), but not with neutral data (e.g., number of lawyers and rainy days).
Motivation
