Abstract
Variability in the use of sarcasm was assessed with a variety of linguistic tasks and self-report measures. Results show that females and older participants used sarcasm less, although the pattern varied by task. These findings are consistent with shifting linguistic standards and stereotypic beliefs about “appropriate” language use.
