Things Get Complicated When I'm Unsure: Ambivalence Under Romantic Outcome Uncertainty

Abstract
Research suggests that people utilize ambivalence as a self-protective mechanism under outcome uncertainty. In two studies extending these findings into the romantic pursuit context, we found that people report more ambivalence towards a romantic interest when recalling uncertain situations relative to those recalling either certain positive or negative situations.
