Self-Teaching in Chinese: The Independent Roles of Phonetic and Semantic Radicals in Orthographic and Vocabulary Learning

Abstract
The present study investigated the influences of phonetic and semantic radicals in orthographic learning and vocabulary learning via self-teaching (i.e., reading aloud) among Chinese children. Findings suggest the relatively independent roles of phonetic and semantic radicals and enrich theoretical understanding and educational implications of self-teaching across writing systems.
