Abstract

Autobiographical memory retrieval is theoretically dichotomous: people retrieve voluntarily or involuntarily. The typical characteristics of these memory types are different—but how distinct are they really? In three pre-registered experiments, we show the characteristics of “voluntary” and “involuntary” memories have markedly overlapping distributions—suggesting the answer is: not very.
