Abstract
We examined within-person fluctuations in the frequency of adolescents’ phone communication as a mechanism linking stress exposure with internalizing symptoms over one year. Greater stress exposure than usual predicted more phone calls and, in turn, worsening internalizing symptoms. An influx of calls prospectively mediated the association between stress and anxiety.
