Abstract

Psychology researchers frequently include categorical predictors in their multilevel models. However, little work has addressed how they should be treated; therefore, they are often inconsistently or incorrectly centered. We demonstrate how and why categorical predictors should be centered in multilevel models, provide recommendations, and explain how to interpret resulting coefficients.
