What Do Laypeople Believe about the Consequences of Traumatic Events?

Abstract
Most people experience a “traumatic” event at some point in their life, and yet psychopathology following these events is rare. But what do laypeople believe about the consequences of traumatic events? Our findings suggest people tend to substantially overestimate how often traumatic events lead to PTSD.
