Expecting the Unexpected: Violation of Expectation Shifts Strategies Toward Information Exploration

The current study sought to directly assess how information processing strategies were altered following an expectation violation by employing a double-surprise-trial paradigm based on the attribute amnesia task. The results revealed that once participants’ expectation was violated, they would switch to a nonselective strategy to retain behavioral flexibility.
