Abstract
College students were randomly assigned to study vocabulary individually or in pairs, plus engaged in pretesting or retrieval practice. These methods of flashcard use yielded comparable performance on an immediate cued-recall test. Importantly, however, using flashcards in pairs yielded significantly improved metacognitive accuracy relative to using flashcards individually.
