Partisanship As Power: Status Seeking Motives Predict Political Polarization

Abstract
In this study, linear regression was performed on data from a nationally representative sample of N= 2338 American adults to determine the relationship between affective political polarization (AP) and evolutionarily adaptive social motives. Results demonstrate that Status Seeking motives significantly predict AP while Group Affiliation motives do not.
