Abstract
Research on post-traumatic growth finds no relationship between actual and perceived growth following stressful events. Thus, we sought to understand potential mechanisms underlying perceived growth. Two studies (N=1,091) found an association between discomfort in response to negative images and perceived growth, suggesting perceived growth may help compensate for dissonance-like emotions.
