Emphasizing Utility Value Promotes Interest Development in a Learning Task

Abstract
Two laboratory studies examined the role of utility value (i.e., usefulness) in promoting interest development. Initially-interested participants became more interested when the utility value of the topic was directly communicated (Study 1, N = 185) and when participants reflected on usefulness for the distant future (Study 2, N = 408).
