Survivors who do not evacuate ahead of hurricanes are often blamed by observers. In two studies, participants were asked to describe survivors (“leavers” and “stayers”) and rate the sensibility of their behavior. Stayers were described as less agentic and less sensible, particularly when their name indicated they were not Caucasian.
