Abstract
Women are underrepresented in many Ph.D. programs and often confront negative stereotypes that increase their negative affect and reduce their feelings of belonging, likely risk factors for attrition. In a sample of first-year Ph.D. students, we found that gender-based threat predicted decreased belonging in graduate school via increased negative affect.
