Abstract
We examined American and Thai mothers’ conversations with their four-year-olds across three communicative tasks. Mother-child dyads participated in prompted reminiscing, book sharing, and toy play. Results revealed differences in discourse styles between groups and across tasks. We conclude that cultural background and nature of interaction influence maternal communication styles.
