The Affiliative Role of Empathy in Everyday Interpersonal Interactions
- Whitney Ringwald
University of Pittsburgh
Abstract
Empathy theoretically facilitates social bonds, yet a growing literature implicates it in non-affiliative processes. One reason for these discrepancies is dependence on methodology that fails to capture empathy’s dynamic and personal nature. This study resolves these inconsistencies by using ecological momentary assessment to substantiate empathy’s affiliative role in everyday life.
