Abstract
This study investigated the achievement motivation of 742 undergraduates from an elite Chinese university. Confirmatory factor analysis found the majority of students were motivated to avoid incompetence relative to themselves and other, by exerting persistent behaviours, and setting personal learning standards. Students in honours programs had significant stronger individual-oriented motivation.
