Abstract

People are more likely to remember animate (living) concepts than inanimate (nonliving) concepts. In two experiments, we examined the contribution of metacognitive beliefs about this effect to the size of the advantage. Although most participants showed the animacy advantage, it was consistently largest for those who endorsed the belief.
