Abstract
Thematic roles (Agent, Patient, etc.) are often analyzed in terms of prototypes, yet the details of these representations are not well understood. We focused on the role Instrument, and hypothesized that the prototypical Instrument is a tool. Experimental evidence from Dutch and German was only partially compatible with this hypothesis.
