Abstract

The longitudinal consequences of victimization depend on variation in gender identification. Victimization most strongly predicted decreases in self-esteem (and increases in depression) when adolescents felt discontent with, or felt atypical of, their own gender. Strong gender identity eliminated these consequences of victimization.
