Longitudinal Prison Data Suggests Possible Relationship between Mandatory Minimums and Prison Demographic Composition

Abstract

Prosecutors’ application of mandatory minimum guidelines varies based on the race of the individual committing an offense, and disproportionally impacts Hispanic males. A longitudinal analysis of US prison data revealed increases in the percentage of incarcerated Hispanic males, and a large decrease in the percentage of incarcerated White males.
