Abstract

We found that support from a friend undermines self-reported state authenticity for non-anxious individuals and criticism makes anxious individuals acutely aware of their negative characteristics. Our findings suggest that both support and criticism reminders can alter state authenticity depending on whether individuals’ attachment needs are met.
