Fear of Death Biases Reporting on Mental Health Assessments

Abstract
A controlled experiment of US Army soldiers deployed to Afghanistan shows that posing questions that activate fear of death biases mental health reporting. Placing the mental health assessments before or after asking about combat exposures influences mental health reporting and this bias is explained by differences in fear of death.
