Abstract

Millions of highly representative births records reveal that parents once falsely constructed desirable dates of birth for their children, apparently to allow their children to "bask in reflected glory." Fueled by medicalized birth practices, the same tendency appears in modern births. Survey data support the hypothesized identity-based mechanisms.
