Forcing ‘Choice’ between Bad Options: Consequences of Ignoring Motivation and Perceived Control in Savings Decision Research

Abstract
Retirement savings research relies on a foundational, yet unproven, assumption that decisions are driven by a preference to spend over saving. Findings from survey data challenge this view, demonstrating that desire for control significantly outweighs desire to spend or achieve strong financial gains.
