Abstract

Neighborhoods affect how adolescents behave, especially in regard to delinquency. This study examines whether two mechanisms, perceived opportunities and future expectations, partially account for the relation between neighborhoods and crime. We found that high levels of neighborhood disorder related to fewer perceived opportunities, which subsequently predicted higher levels of offending.
