High School Girls in STEM: Positive Gender Identity May Protect Against Discouragement from Others

Abstract

Findings of the current study indicate that gender identity and discouragement in science are negatively correlated among 66 female high-school students. These findings have implications for supporting girls in STEM disciplines, wherein negative gendered messages in STEM environments may be related to girls’ gender identity broadly.
