Abstract

This study compared musicians to nonmusicians to assess how musical training is related to reading skill. Results suggested that musicians have greater phonological awareness, and rely more heavily on phonological processes when identifying a word. One possible musical mechanism related to the improvement of phonological awareness may be rhythm awareness.
