Teaching Rats to Drive: A Novel Method for Spatial Navigation Research in Rats

Abstract

We designed and built a small electric vehicle and developed a training protocol to teach rats to drive it. Six female Long-Evans rats learned to drive forward 165 cms and to turn the car 110 degrees in order to receive a food reward. We discuss implications for spatial navigation research.
