Comparison of Korean Language Development in Korean Monolingual and Korean-English Bilingual Preschool Children Indicates Both Similarities and Differences

Abstract

This study compares the first language (Korean) development of 17 monolinguals in Korea and 29 preschool-aged Korean-English bilinguals in the U.S. Narrative, vocabulary, and grammar tasks revealed similar general patterns of development between monolinguals and bilinguals, with monolinguals’ task performance being significantly greater than that of bilinguals.
