Abstract
Participants were surveyed about experiences with family ostracism. Among other information, we asked them to explain the perceived motive for ostracism. Using content analysis, we found evidence of replication of existing models of motives for ostracism. However, a unique category emerged, “Protective Ostracism”, which may be specific to close relationships.
