The Role of Social Identity in the Spread of Outgroup-Sanctioning Content Online

Abstract

In two pre-registered studies we found that participants who were more strongly identified with their political group were more likely to choose moral-emotional social media messages that sanction the outgroup, and that this phenomenon was better explained by mere salience of political identity rather than identity threat or affirmation.
