Image-Based Social Media and Its Effect on Body Image

Abstract

Male and female university students were randomly assigned to browse a gender-specific fashion magazine website, their own Instagram feed (an image-based social media website), or an appearance-neutral website. Across conditions, female students subsequently reported worse body image than males. Potential theoretical and methodological explanations for these findings are discussed.
