Colorism in Context: Exploring Differential Effects of Gender on Skin Tone Bias

Abstract

Three studies examine how skin-tone and gender bias categorization and evaluation. Participants were faster at categorizing light- vs. dark-skinned Black women as women, and the reverse for Black men. In Study 3, participants made social evaluations of targets, and evaluated light-skinned targets more favorably, especially light- vs. dark-skinned female targets.
