Abstract

Eyewitnesses often provide free narratives describing crimes and then answer follow-up questions. This experiment examined the quality of eyewitness information produced as a function of interview format and instructions given before follow-up questions. Instructions to respond “I don’t know” when needed seemed to have the greatest impact on information provided.
