Abstract

We analyzed semi-structured interviews of 56 Black adolescent girls to examine how they conceptualize the meaning of #BlackGirlMagic, a space that celebrates beauty but potentially silences oppression. The majority of our sample viewed #BlackGirlMagic as a space for self-affirmation (73%) and to combat racial and gendered narratives of oppression (57%).
